The Challenge

Wydels needed to showcase their vast product range in an easy-to-navigate format, allowing users to quickly and easily find the products they needed. The site had to ensure users could find products via traditional categories and by key manufacturers. Featured products and special offers were required to promote seasonal or trending goods.

Products not only needed to be found by users, but also by search engines. Products and ranges would rank well in organic search engine results.

Thirdly, the site needed to look great and match Wydels’ established brand.

Lastly, Wydels desired the ability for price ranges dependant on the number of items purchased.

The Approach

River CMS’s first-rate ecommerce features were used to let the user to easily access the products they needed to find. This was achieved via several techniques:

River CMS’s Ecommerce Supernav was used to cut down on the amount of clicks a user makes to find their product(s). The navigation allows for finding products by type (e.g. lamps) and also via manufacturer (e.g. Aurora). As well as the Supernav, a product search is available for users knowing exactly what they need. Alongside the search is a list of popular searches to guide users to areas that a lot of people search for. When looking at products or categories users know where they are in the website via sub-navigation and a breadcrumb trail. This ensures that if a particular category isn’t looking fruitful, there is an easy way to either go back or jump to a similar product category. When viewing a product, similar or associated products are available to view and buy, thus helping the user to buy accessories simply.

River CMS’s Special Offers module caters for Wydels’ need to reduce the price of certain products on occasions. Wydels can reduce product prices by a percentage or by so many pounds as required.

To achieve good rankings in search engines, River CMS’s Ecommerce SEO features were used. Product categories and products use best practice SEO techniques (title tags and URL structures for instance) as well as providing a good amount of relevant information about each product/category on each page.

The site is aesthetically pleasing with bold colours used in banners, buttons and callouts. The homepage uses a product carousel for featured products and product pages and categories look inviting and well-spaced, allowing the content to breathe.

The price ranging was implemented as required. An example is available on this particular product.

The Results

As well as a happy client, the Wydels website is looking great and selling products regularly. Over 9000 pages are indexed in Google, with approximately 250 daily visits at time of writing. A page one ranking for electrical supplies online so early in the website’s life is a testament to River CMS’s SEO capabilities.
